Meet Stan Horton
The Hetzel Hall Director
Undergraduate Degree: BA in Political Science from Siena College
Graduate Degree: MA in Student Affairs in Higher Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Why did you become a hall director?
I became a hall director because I absolutely loved being an RA while I was at Siena College. I met so many different people as an RA and I thoroughly enjoyed helping others and coordinating programs. I also enjoy those conversations that take place spur of the moment in a residence hall and I thrive off of good debates and discussions. I learned quite a lot about myself and who I want to be by living in a residence hall and I hope that I can help others in that same capacity. I welcome anyone to come and visit me, so stop on by.
Why did you choose UNH?
I chose UNH because I have heard amazing things about the department and I wanted to experience a large staff. I like to be challenged and I think having 22 other hall directors around me will definitely satisfy my want for a challenge. I have a best friend who is a hall director here, so that didn’t hurt.
I also chose UNH because I am originally from Upstate New York and this institution is a perfect distance for me to go visit my family when I want to.
Advice for students…
Get Involved. You will find some amazing people who have some of the same interests as you or you may acquire new interests by meeting people.
Keep your door open. You never know who could be walking past your room or what event could be taking place right outside your door.
Along with keeping your door open, be open yourself. Try new things, study abroad, take a class in something totally foreign to you, try all different foods and listen to others opinions.
Lastly, talk to people. This may sound silly but strike up a conversation with a new person every day. This includes your professors, any staff members and other students. It is pretty amazing how one conversation can change your perspective.
